if you’re from one of those 42 countries that doesn’t need a full visa and you’re planning a US trip… you’re gonna need to budget a bit more. the ESTA fee jumped from $21 to $40.27. it’s a big leap and it kind of shows where things are headed with travel rules this year.
what actually happened
this hike happened in two stages. first, congress passed this bill and the fee shot up to $40 back in september 2025. honestly, that was the biggest jump since the whole ESTA thing started back in 2009. then, because of inflation or whatever, it ticked up again to $40.27 in january 2026.
the government splits the fee into two parts:
a $4 processing fee (which stays the same)
a $36.27 “authorization” fee
some of that extra money is actually going to help fund tourism marketing because they lost a bunch of federal money recently. kinda weird to charge tourists more to fund ways to get more tourists… but that’s what they’re doing.
what is still the same
even though it’s pricier, the actual process hasn’t changed much:
you still get up to 90 days for vacation or business
no interview needed (thank god)
it’s still good for 2 years, or until your passport expires
most people get approved instantly, but it can take like 72 hours sometimes
if you get denied, they only keep the $4. you don’t have to pay the big $36 part if you don’t get the authorization.
why it’s a big deal
people in the travel industry are pretty worried about this. one guy called it a “self-tax on tourism.” they’re basically wondering if people will just skip the US and spend their money somewhere else instead because it’s getting so expensive.
compared to other visas that got way harder to get in 2026, the ESTA is still pretty easy… it just costs a lot more now.
what to watch out for
only use the official site. seriously.
there are so many third-party sites that look official but they charge way more than the $40.27. it’s a total rip off.
also, try to apply as soon as you start thinking about the trip. at least 72 hours before you fly, just in case they need to look at your stuff longer.
this is just general info. definitely check the official site (esta.cbp.dhs.gov) before you apply because these fees and rules are always moving around.
