Romania is finally in the visa program — but Chile might be getting kicked out

so the us visa waiver thing doesn’t really change that much
which is why 2026 is actually a big deal.
romania just got added in march
but now there’s a real chance chile might lose their spot.
it’s a pretty rare shift for how this stuff usually goes.

What the Visa Waiver Program Actually Does

this started back in the 80s.
basically it lets people from certain countries visit the us for 90 days
without needing a whole official visa from the embassy.
you just get an approved ESTA and you’re good.
there are 42 countries on the list as of right now.

Romania’s Long-Awaited Addition

romania finally joined in march 2026.
people have been talking about this for like… forever.
at least ten years.
qatar got in back in 2025, and now romania.
it’s been a slow crawl adding places like poland and croatia over the last few years.

How do you even get in?

countries don’t just get invited for fun.
they have to meet these super strict security rules.
like, the visa rejection rate has to be under 3% for people trying to visit.
plus they have to share a lot of security info with the us.
it’s mostly for countries where people don’t overstay their welcome.

Now the Flip Side: Chile’s Possible Removal

this is the weird part.
the us can actually kick a country out whenever they want if there’s a security risk.
and that’s what they’re talking about with chile right now.
it almost never happens though.
in 40 years, only two countries have ever been removed (argentina and uruguay).
so if chile gets cut… it’s a huge deal.

New Rules That Already Mess with Things

even if your country is on the “good” list, you might still get blocked.
if you’ve been to north korea, iran, or syria since 2011…
no esta for you.
you have to do the long, annoying visa process instead.
they are also getting way stricter with dual citizens from certain places in 2026.

Important Reminder: ESTA Isn’t a Guarantee

even if you have an esta, it doesn’t mean you’re 100% in.
it just lets you get on the plane.
the officer at the airport still makes the final call.
it makes things way easier, but it’s not a total “get in free” card.

The Bottom Line

2026 is showing two things at once:
they’re adding more friends like romania
but they’re also watching everyone a lot closer.
if you’re romanian, this is great news.
if you’re tracking the chile situation, you might want to keep an eye on it.
could get messy.

this is just for info. definitely check the official dhs or cbp sites before you actually book a flight.
